When you wish upon a star...

Super Stars wish for classroom supplies:
paper towels

large glue sticks

watercolor brushes (of all sizes)

pens (all colors - we are writing so much that our pens continually run out of ink)

fine point expo dry-erase markers

kleenex (we are down to one box)

Classroom Pictures

We will be taking our classroom pictures on Monday March 30th. Please wear your regular school uniform. The cost of the picture is $10.00. Forms went home in the Tuesday folders.

Back to Work!

This has been a very busy week getting back into the swing of things. We are all working very hard. We are exploring human rights through stories, plays and discussions. As a result we realized we have rights and responsibilities to each other. This led to the class to develop five Essential Agreements. These agreements will make the learning place a fun, happy and safe place for everyone.

Art A La Carte

Thank you, Mr. Keene for an intriguing look at art.

Interactive Theater Field Trip

Very interesting and enlightening performance. The students were mesmerized! Thanks moms as always for helping out! The performance had such an impact that students were still talking and writing about it yesterday in their reflection journals.

SPACE

Your children have taught me so much about space! We used the Big 3 research method to find information on the planets, moon and sun. Today everyone made their presentations to the class. What an amazing job! We even had Planet TV where Jupiter made a surprise visit.

Everything you wanted to know...

about angles, polygons, inches, centimeters lines, 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional shapes! Here we are in cooperative groups researching and compiling information about various math topics. The students used the student math reference book to discuss and design a possible poster layout that would assist us all in learning about a concept. After the plan had been formulated, the students went to work creating a poster that could be placed in the room for all to see.

Space

We have been working throughout our space planner on researching using the Big 3. The Big 3 is a research method that helps the students to organize and plan what they want to accomplish. We are now ready to enter the final stage where we review our projects and information to see if we have accomplished the goal. Each research group will present their findings to the class.

Daily Five

The Daily 5 is a time when the students work independently on reading and writing skills. They can work with a partner or by themselves. I love watching how the students create challenges for themselves! This week they worked on poems about comets, spelled words related to space to find the value, and worked with each other to create stories.

Principal for the Day

This article was written by TH whose parents purchased,
"Principle of the Day" at the Mark Twain Auction.

Being principal for the day was the most fun school experience I think I have ever had. When we walked into the classrooms I was nervous. But when we got to the 5th classroom I wasn’t so nervous. I liked how we got to plan the day out. I was very excited when Ms. Angela made me the raises for teachers. I thought it was the coolest thing anyone had ever made from the computer. I had a really good time at lunch. We had great conversations and my food was really good. (I hope my food was as good as hers.) I thought it was super nice that she let me get ice cream. I still feel bad that she fell and hurt her ankle. I was very surprised when Ms. Black told me I was going to start the presentation on praise dance and choir singing. I think I did better with K-2 than with 3-5 but over all I think I did a good job.

I was very glad that the last time Ms. Dauber did the principal for the day before she retired, I got to do it with her. Thank you Mrs. Dauber for such a great day.

Strategy Man Arrives!!

The Super Stars received a special package today that generated a little excitement for the TAKS test. It was none other than STRATEGY MAN! He sent us a little treat, but before it could be enjoyed we had to use our strategies to solve the math problem he presented.

TAKS

The time has come and we are ready!!! We have learned all our strategies and practiced implementing them. Here are some additional tips:

DON’T FORGET
It is important to remember, and remind your children that this is an “un-timed test.” Remind them to take “frequent breaks,” stretch their legs and go to the restroom. As long as the students are actively working on the exam, they will be allowed to finish it. (We have discussed this at length in the classroom.)
THE NIGHT BEFORE…(NO HOMEWORK) That being said, you can (and should) see to it that your kids get plenty of sleep the night before the exam. Everything including homework, class-work, housework, and extra-curricular activities should take a “back-seat” to the TAKS exam.
THE DAY OF…Kids need a good breakfast!!
FINALLY…Give lots of encouragement. Point out all the things you know they do well.

The New Frontier

Here the students are working with a partner to discuss chapter seven in our science books. Together they created an outline of important information.

Solar System

This week we had a substitute who took the time to come and tell me how great The Super Stars were! He told me how they used the information in this booklet along with their research projects to create informative skits used to teach the rest of the class. As you know, I love to have the students work in cooperative groups. It was exciting to hear someone else's perspective (I maybe a little biased because I always think The Super Stars are Super!!). He went on and on about how great they worked in their independent groups and how creative their presentations were.

NASA Field Trip

The Super Stars continued to talk this week about all the events that happened during the field trip to NASA. Every book we are reading reminds them of an experience at NASA. The movie, the tram ride, and the simulators all had a great impact on their learning. (No one mentioned the now infamous jungle gym). A huge thank you to all the parents for your help and support for this very educational field trip.

Promotion Standards

Dear Parents, Please do not forget to return the signed document showing acknowledgment of the promotion standards. I must have this for the students' permanent file. This went home in the Tuesday folder two weeks ago. Thank you for your help.

LDC

The last two weeks in LDC were very exciting! The main character in the story has to save the planet! The Super Stars did an amazing job with their journals too. So amazing, that Mrs. Gee is making copies to show the fifth graders! This book is only one in a series so check it out the next time you go to the library. I know the Super Stars are ready for the next one.
