The Huckleberry Bash is coming up on March 5th. Be sure to check out the amazing classroom creation by The Discoverers. Thanks to Mrs. G. for putting the idea together and making it happen I can't wait to see the final project!
Into the Unknown Part II
After reading, Into the Unknown, The Discoverers decided to teach others by creating postcards. Each group decided who should receive the postcard and then they got right to work. First, they had to discuss what the important or main idea of the chapter was. Next, they needed at least three details to support that main idea. Finally, we went on a walk around school to deliver the postcards. The students were so proud to share their new information.
George Observatory
What an adventure! The Discoverers had an amazing time at the George Observatory. We started with a slide show about the galaxy learning about the planets. Our presenter could not believe we were third graders because we knew so much information!! That segment of the field trip ended in a song about the planets. (I got that part on video!) Next, we went to mission control where all students were assigned jobs such as life support, probe launcher, commander and researcher. We had no idea what would happen next! They brought us to another room that was like walking through space and through a secret door. We ended up in a room like a spaceship. It was incredible. Everyone did a great job following the directions and taking off for a trip to the moon. What an exciting day!
Math Workstations
Pause music below and then click on arrow to begin video showing students working in math workstations. In this video, a group is discussing three dimensional figures.
How the World Works
Our new planner, The Final Frontier, will be exploring space. We will be learning about how the solar system works, and how it is a part of a vast universe. How appropriate that the first book we read was titled, Into the Unknown. The Discoverers worked in groups to read and understand the information. The groups then presented and taught their assigned chapter to the rest of the class.
Rainy Day Architecture!
A House for a Mouse??
That's right - a house for a mouse. As part of our Architecture planner we explored form, function, style and expression. The assignment was to become an architect who has a mouse for a client. Our mouse had very specific instructions on what was needed and the architects had to create the design. We used the same methods as any architect would use. First we interviewed the client and created a bubble diagram showing how the house would look. Next, we turned the bubble diagram into a floor plan using centimeter grid paper. The final step was to create a front elevation to show the style of the house. The end results are hanging in the third grade hallway. They were so amazing that Mrs. Norris borrowed a few of them to use in the Gifted and Talented Expo! Way to go, Discoverers!!
