Preparing for Astronaut Interviews

Preparing for Astronaut Interviews on PhotoPeach
The Navigators are working together in cooperative teams that include three astronauts and one journalist.  The assignment is to read  about exploration and present their knowledge through a series of questions and answers.  We decided that props would add a lot of interest to our interviews.  On this slideshow, you can see the effort and creativity that went in to developing whatever is needed for the show!  I enjoyed watching everyone work together and share ideas.  The end result is a video montage of the interviews. (Scroll down to find that posting.)

Read Across America - March 1st

March 1st - Read Across America (also known as Dr. Seuss Day)
Since we have been studying what it means to be internationally minded, The Navigators decided to make Read Across America Day a cultural experience.  Students brought in books written in different languages that represented their cultures.  I, of course, brought story books and nursery rhymes written in Dutch.  There books written in Spanish, French and many other languages.  It was very exciting to share our love of reading in such a unique way.  In order to make the event even more appetizing...  everyone brought in food from different cultures.  We had so many appealing treats!  Kate made a traditional Irish bread,  there were several different kinds of cookies, and rusk with hagel!  It was a very tasty day!

Conferencing

During Writer's Workshop, the students complete the writing cycle independently.  Here the students are  conferencing to determine what needs to be revised.  In a writer's conference, a student will read their work out loud and ask their classmates for constructive criticism.  This will lead to a discussion of what part of the writing they liked and will invite discussions about the piece.  Students can ask questions of the writer to help make the story or poem easier for the reader to understand.

Legos!!

Ummmm...  we love legos!  As part of our twenty minutes of free time plan, students can choose to work with Legos.  We have had some very interesting structures. I am not sure what Jack, Nicolas, Alex and Doran are up to, but it sure looks like fun!

and the winners are...

Congratulations to our Science Fair winners!  Each group had to present their project to the Mark Twain judges.  Those judges were tough and asked a lot of questions!  Our representatives did a great job and were very knowledgeable about their individual projects.

Science Fair Presentations

The Navigators thoroughly enjoyed the science fair!  Over the past few days
we have been presenting each project to an excited audience - us!
I used the rubric provided by Ms. Reese to rate each project.
The three highest scoring projects were displayed in the hallway,
where they were judged by a panel of teachers and parents.
