Research Presenations

The Superheroes took the research they did and turned it into a product of their choice.  Next, they had to present the product to the class to teach us about the American symbols.

Research Products

Here is a sampling of some of the products that were created by The Superheroes!  A game show where contestants had to push the buzzer and get the right answer for ten points.  A poster diagram of a memorial.  A game that includes game pieces, questions, and detailed information on how to move.  Bush toss - throw the ball and if you get it into a container you learn something new.  A 3-dimensional representation of the Washington Monument.  Whew!!  What an amazing job!  What will we do next?

Research Project

When we began working with money, The Superheroes were fascinated with who was on the heads side and what was on the tails side.  That lead to a research project of all the American symbols we could think.  Every student picked one person, monument or memorial to research.   The next step was to decide what product to make to show what we have learned.  In this series of pictures, you can see us hard at work developing our projects and reviewing our research.

Retelling Station Part II

The Superheroes continue to work independently and with partners during station time.  Each student has different goals and areas to work on.  In case you haven't heard - we have a new retelling station or tepee or tent.  I won it at our Mark Twain Bash!!  The students work with a partner and retell the story of the week using storytelling cards, the book and puppets.

Thank you notes

Well, our last semester in first grade started out very calm and then came Wednesday!  Whew, what a day.  The Superheroes were troupers.  Our only big disappointment came when we had to go to lunch without our lunchboxes!  So proud of how everyone was principled during all the confusion.  Today, since we missed Writing Wednesday, we decided to write thank you notes to those people who helped us.  Then, we delivered them.  Everyone was surprised and happy to receive their special note.  I pulled Mr. Lucky's name from the hat - and I don't know if everyone knows this but he stayed ALL night to help with the clean up!  We left Mrs. Dennis' in her temporary classroom (we couldn't find her).  I saw her later and she said she was so grateful for the kind note!  See, even first graders can make a difference!  Keep up the good work, Superheroes.  Our next letter will be to President Obama.  What we will say??

Parent Visitor

We ended our day before Spring Break with a very special visitor;  Emil's dad.   He taught us all about our hearts.  The students were great listeners and were enthralled with the doctors' tools.
The video presentation was amazing and we (I) learned a lot.
Thank you to Emil's dad!!
We also got a new quote for the day, "I love you from the tip of my heart."

The Germy Potato!!

Did you hear about the germy potato experiment?  The Superheroes have been observing what happens when germs are not washed off.  We connected to and compared to when students do not wash their hands.  We had three potatoes....  the first one everyone touched with dirty hands, the second we touched after washing hands and the third was the control and only I touched it with clean hands.  The results were amazing and gross at the same time.  Obviously the potato with all our germs on it did not look good.  FYI I sealed the bags so that they could not be opened.  Ms. Reese had our experiment displayed during Science Fair Night.  Way to go, Superheroes!!  Now you know how it important it is to wash your hands!

How We Organize Ourselves Summative

We ended our fourth planner of the year today!  This summative required a group effort.  Students were divided into cooperative groups and given a task to complete.  However, each group only had some of what they needed to complete the task.  The students had to trade and barter in order to finish the job!  The Superheroes did a great job!  They worked together as a whole team and within their small groups helping each other to complete the task.  The end product will be in their PYP portfolios for you to view during student-led conferences.

Another busy week for The Superheroes

The Superheroes have been very busy this week.   We had a few days without outdoor recess, so we explored with blocks and various games instead.  We continue to learn through various stations
such as the white board where you can write stories or a math station
where you can become an expert on skip counting.  The newest edition to our day is a Superhero Journal
where we record what we have learned or reflect on our day using the PYP profile words.

The Superheroes in the Garden

This week we read an animal fantasy story where the characters had gardens.   That prompted us to want to plant something.  We had one big issue though!  NO SUN!  Our classroom does not get any sun during the day.  So off to the garden we went.   First we explored the parts of plants and like a scientist we created a diagram.  Next, we mixed up the dirt and planted a seed.

Looking for a Great Book

This week we worked on writing summaries of stories.
The students choose a book that was just right for them.
We have learned that not only do you need to be able to read,
you need to be able to comprehend what the story is about.
The students then created their own book jacket with a summary written on the back.
Come by and see if you can find a great new book to read!

Trail Riders!

I think the Superheroes were a little excited when the Trail Riders came by Mark Twain.

Scoot

Scoot is a cooperative learning game we play in the classroom.  The students were divided into groups of three.  First they had to decide what everyone's roles and responsibilities were.   Next, the groups were positioned around the room and when I said, "scoot!" they had to move to the next table.  The goal was to work as a team deciding on the needs and wants of various pictures.  This lead to a great discussion of goods and services.  Learning and fun at the same time, what could be better!

The Germy Potato Experiment

Today we began an interesting experiment.  We wondered if washing your hands and using soap after you cough and sneeze helps eliminate germs.  First, I peeled a potato and everyone touched it, coughed on it or in some cases rubbed their shoes on it.  The second potato we all touched after we cleaned our hands and the third potato was only touched by me.  What do you think will happen?

Parent Reader

Today Colin's dad visited with The Superheroes.   He read a book that tied into our current planner.  There was a great discussion about jobs and the roles and responsibilities of those jobs.
