Writer's Workshop

I love this photo of my Superheroes gathering together for an impromptu conference
 to discuss revising their poems!

Almost Done!

The Superheroes have been working on this art project for over a week!  As you can see - the end results are going to be magnificent!  I am so excited to witness the amount of work and effort that went in to the planning of the boards, the designs, and the painting or coloring.

Bark Painting

First, we need to soften the paper and create texture.

Bark Painting

This week we decided to go back in time to find out about bark painting.  What did people use before paper was invented?  We learned about the Amate bark painting and the techniques that the people used. One thing was the usage of black lines to create an outline.  The lines could be thick or thin, straight or wavy.  We tried the procedure using brown paper bags to represent the bark.

Post cards to my friends

Each student will receive a memory card from everyone in the class.   As we work on the memories, we utilize our grammar and spelling rules we have learned in first grade.  Parents are welcome to participate by drawing or having their child dictate a memory to them.   Next, we create a picture on the front of the post card that illustrates the memory.

Memory Boards - Phase Two

Today we learn how to write a letter that tells a story.  My students noticed right away three (our magic number) parts to a letter.  I love this part of the Memories in my Pocket project.  It's all about sitting together with your friends and sharing all the amazing things we accomplished in first grade.

Collage

How We Express Ourselves is all about exploring different materials and techniques to create art. This week we are taking a look at the art of collage.  We read an interesting story about a girl who creates a collage that has a lot of texture for her grandfather who is blind. We also explored the art of Eric Carle and Leo Lionni, two authors who also illustrate their stories with collages.

Memory Boards

Our next project will be combining many content areas at once.  It is called 'Memories in my Pocket'.  It is one of my favorite projects and has been evolving over the years.  We begin with a visit from our fifth grade buddies who help us outline our body on a large poster board.  This is a great time for the first graders to use their communication skills to talk about events that have happened in first grade.  This project will progress over the next couple of weeks.

Painting like Pros

The Superheroes are learning how to paint like the experts.  We are exploring techniques that painters use to create their art.  When using water colors you have to be patient because you don't want to mix all the colors.  That means your work may take two or three days to complete.  The end results are amazing.  These masterpieces can be found in our Museum of Mysterious Surprises.

How We Express Ourselves

We have delved into our last planner of first grade.  The students are very excited because it is all about art.   We conducted a questionnaire and gathered data about what kind of art do you like.  The answer was surprising because the majority of students said sculptures.   This week I utilized all those beautiful flowers I received for teacher appreciation to do a lesson on the art of Georgia O'Keeffe.   The students chose a flower that intrigued them and we examined them very closely.  Next, we drew what we saw BIG like Georgia does.  The final step is painting!

Rock Hunters

At the science museum, I picked up two rock hunting kits.  It has become our latest obsession trying to dig them out!  We have learned that it is not easy work.  So we have to work together to accomplish the same goal!

The Hill!!

FIELD TRIP

We had the most extraordinary day for our field trip to the museum.  We had a great time visiting the various exhibits but the best part was the HILL of course!.  A special thanks to all the moms for coming and helping out on our last field trip!

Writer's Workshop

Writer's Workshop has evolved so much throughout the year.  In the beginning students were only interested in writing something quickly and being done!  Now,  our Writer's Workshop can last up to 45 minutes.  The students are revising, conferencing, editing and publishing.
 Way to go, Superheroes!
