We ended our planner on the Final Frontier with a space trading card assignment. Students were required to complete a trading card for the 8 planets (Pluto is a dwarf planet) and any other star, galaxy or satellite that they wanted to. Each card required four facts to be listed on the back. We began by sorting and categorizing our cards to show our knowledge of the Solar System. The last step was to trade our creations. This created a huge problem when one student created cards that everyone wanted. The Discoverers quickly realized that the demand did not meet the supply! Using our knowledge about economics from a previous planner, several students came up with a plan to make more and market the cards for a dollar each! If you are interested in a set of trading cards of the planets please contact The Discoverers!

Race To The Moon
Race to the Moon is the story of the Apollo 11 flight. We practiced asking "thick and thin" questions with this non-fiction book. A "thin" question is a question that is easily found such as: What year was the flight? A "thick" question is a question that you have to think about such as: Why are Neil Armstrong's footprints still on the moon? We then created a story bag with a picture clue on the front to be used to retell the events of Apollo 11. When I asked the students why we were doing this project they replied, "because we need to learn and it should be fun!"
