Reading to a packed audience

The Discoverers read their original works of poetry to a packed audience Wednesday the 19th. The event was a culmination of a year long writing project directed by Ms. Musters. Some of the titles include: The Night Sky, This is Me and Looking Through My Grandparent's Window. The Discoverers also performed a group poem written about who they are and what they do. The message of the poem was that we had all become a community and a family. By the end of the reading, it felt like the whole audience had become a family with everyone applauding for each of the readers. The Discoverers were congratulated on their work not only by relatives, but by strangers who were moved by the power of their words.

School Writing Project Reading at Rice University

The Grand Hall at Rice University was transformed into the School Writing Project's Annual Spring Reading. The artwork and writing by the students changed the room into a student friendly oasis. The Discoverers arrived to find their memory boards adorning the walls and their quotes about writing displayed for all to read. There were over 200 people in attendance to hear the amazing writing created by these young, talented students. The audience was wowed with their talent and the quality of the writing. I do not think I am exaggerating when I say there were moments when the audience cried, laughed and applauded as one. The community created by the parents, grandparents, siblings, teachers and supporters was nothing short of extraordinary. Thank you everyone for being a part of this special moment in the lives of the Discoverers.

Spring Reading at Rice University

Wednesday, May 19th will be a very exciting day for the Discoverers because they will be going to college! The School Writing Project's annual Spring Reading will be at Rice University from 4:30-6:30pm. The students pictured have individual poems that were selected to be read in front of a packed audience. It shouldn't be missed! In addition to the individual poems selected, a class group poem written by The Discoverers was also chosen. The students have been collaborating together on how to present this poem. I will just say that I am getting batteries for all my cameras because I want to make sure to get this on film! It is going to be amazing!
Bravo, Discoverers!

Fact Frenzy

The Discoverers are hard at work during math time! We continue to challenge ourselves to learn all our multiplication facts to 12. (p.s. we are getting pretty good!)

FIELD DAY

Field day was a huge success. Thank you to all the many parents who helped with snack, lunch, treats, and events. The Mighty Meteorites could not have done it without you. As you can see by the faces in the pictures - we had a great time. The Four Man race was a little difficult and we could not keep those straps on!! The Meteorites worked hard together to finish the race. Way to go you guys! I can't believe some friends actually crawled across the field! That's dedication! The Capture the Flag event kept us busy running up and down the stairs collecting clues. We ended the day with the infamous Tug of War. It was not easy, but once we figured out how to work together we had two wins! What an exciting way to end the day!

Introducing the Mighty Meteorites!

Here we are at the beginning of the day! Ready and eager for another fantastic Field Day at Mark Twain. Look at that excitement! Must be the awesome t-shirts Mrs. Boeker got for us!

Memories in My Pocket Project

The Discoverers are working on a month long project to end the year. Each student has created a memory board that looks like them. Every day we will be creating a postcard memory for someone in the classroom. The postcard will consist of a letter detailing an event we had in third grade and the other side will have an illustration of the event. We are having a great time sharing stories about our year together while working on our writing skills. Parents, you are welcome to write a card, note or letter and place it in the memory pockets too!

Putting the Pieces of Field Day Together
~ COOPERATION ~ INTEGRITY ~ RISK TAKING ~ COMMUNICATING ~ RESPECT ~ TOLERANCE~

• Field day will be on Wednesday, May 12th.
• Field Day for grades K – 2 will be held from 8:30 am to 11:00 am.
• Field Day for grades 3 – 5 will be held from 11:45 am to 2:15 pm.
• Please read the letter from the Nutrition Committee about snacks allowed on Field Day, reusable water bottles, recycling, and the Snack Valet Area.
• On field day, students should dress appropriately. Remember that it is going to be HOT! That means wear tennis shoes—no sandals, flip flops, crocs, or cleats! Students should wear their class’s field day t-shirt and may also wear shorts. (Students in K-2 may want to wear capris or pants to protect their knees during the caterpillar race. They may bring kneepads for this event.) Students may wear sunglasses, and can bring a cord to hold glasses around their necks. Hats are also allowed for field day.
• Grades 3 – 5 will have tug-of-war as an event. You may send gloves or baby powder with your child for this event.
• Students should wear sunscreen on Field Day!
• There will be spectator areas for parents and guests who wish to watch their children participate in the events.
• PARENT VOLUNTEERS—We need at least one volunteer per class to assist your child’s class during events on field day. A few parents can also split up that responsibility. Volunteers for specific events will need to check in at one of the two guest relation tables to get a Volunteer Pass.

Dear Parents,

We would like to inform you about a couple of things about Field Day.

On Field Day, you should NOT have sweet treats to eat on the field or in the cafeteria, but you may have them in the classroom. Some examples of good “GO” Field Day snacks include fruits, veggies, fruit juice, yogurt, granola bars, and real fruit popsicles (the ones that are not made with high fructose corn syrup or sugar as one of the first ingredients). Some “SLOW” and “WHOA” foods that we discourage are candy, chips, cookies, sugary popsicles, and ice cream.

Also, we will be eating lunch in the classroom that day. The cafeteria will be serving ham & cheese hoagies, oranges, carrots, and milk.

There will be a Snack Valet area located inside the cafeteria. Parents will be able to drop off snacks and coolers in designated grade level areas. Parents or a child can come and pick up the snack from the cafeteria and bring it outside to eat in a designated snack area.

Please encourage your child to bring a reusable water bottle that can be refilled at the water fountain or with a class cooler. We will also have recycling bins around the field for bottles. Please don’t put plastic bottles in the regular trash bins. We would love for the parents who are providing water to bring either a cooler or gallon jugs for refilling the reusable bottles.

Thanks,
The Nutrition Committee (Mrs. Zirczy’s Class)
