Jewels Again!!

The Superheroes have done it again!  Together they have filled up the jewel jar by following our Essential Agreements.  We voted on how we wanted to treat ourselves and a game day won!

Mapping

Our planner:  Where We Are in Time and Place is coming to an end.
We used our new knowledge about symbols and maps on the summative product.
The Superheroes worked together in cooperative groups to create a neighborhood map.
Each student had a job to do such as reporter, materials manager and data collector.
The final products are on our bulletin board right now!

Stormy Weather...

This first week back at school we have had some crazy weather.  Makes it the perfect time to explore the three main types of clouds.  The Superheroes studied the characteristics of each cloud and then used their new information to create a model.
Great job, but lets hope we have some sunny weather coming!

Reflections

Everyday that we can we stop to take a moment and reflect on our day.  What have we learned?  What do we need to improve upon?  The reflections are then placed in a special book in the classroom library.  We love looking back to the beginning of the year to read what we wrote!

Happy New Year!!

Happy New Year to the amazing Superheroes!  We started the year off right with making a goal for ourselves!  Came by the first grade hallway to see what we are thinking.

Field Day (in the cold)

Ms. Musters' Super Monkeys had a great Field Day! We worked hard and had a lot of fun!  By the time it was 11:00- we were all starving!  Thank you parents for coming and assisting me getting the group from one place to the next. Thank you to Liam's mom for coming in the afternoon and doing a fun Art a la Cart and for providing snacks.  It was a great last day before the winter break.
See you all in 2016!

Field Day

A little glimpse of the fun we had on Field Day!

First Grade Program

The First Grade Program was a hugh success because of the amazing Ms. Bardin.   All I had to do was line up the children!  First we met in the classroom and then we had to line up.
The kids were so nervous.  Most of my pictures did not come up because of the lighting.
But these give you an idea of how we looked on stage.
The last pictures sums up the energy and how great we felt when the program was finished!

Holiday Party

Thanks everyone for a great holiday party!
We had a lot of fun making the reindeer water bottles and then we turned ourselves into reindeer!
Thank you for all the thoughtful gifts and the beautiful tree.
I really enjoyed that over the winter break.

Art A La Carte

Thank you moms for covering my class so I could attend breakfast party with Ms. Patin.  The lesson on Matisse was very inspiring.  Your influence on the students didn't end on that day...   Later we were inspired to create a backdrop for our story acting and your lesson was the inspiration!
All the Superheroes worked together and pieced together
a backdrop in the style of Matisse and it looks amazing!

DEAR

During our D.E.A.R. time today, all of the Superheroes wanted to eat a treat from Sinterklaas and read their new books.  They were so excited about the new books how could I say no.

Sinterklaas Gifts

The Superheroes were very excited to find out that Sinterklaas had left a gift for everyone!  It was wonderful to see their excitement and exclaim, "I love this book or this is my favorite book!"  One book was the character Fly Guy and the students were so excited to find out there was a hero  or herozzz (As Fly Guy would say) in the book!  Also included was a game board with dice and a list of math games to play at home.  It should fit perfectly in their homework box. (hint, hint).

On a Mission...

Sinterklaas left us a riddle to solve so we are on a mission.  First riddle we found the present in the room and it was superhero masks for everyone.  Then there was another riddle.  We figured out that we had to go to the office, but we didn't know where.  Jackson knew that the only person who talks to everyone is Ms. Liz.  And guess what she had the third riddle!  It said something about three steps.  Well, the only place with three steps is the stage.  We snuck from the office to the stage and there on the world rug in the middle of the stage we found a gift bag.  (Strategically placed where one would find The Netherlands on the map!) We grabbed our bag of presents and headed back to the room!

SURPRISE!!

While we were out to lunch and recess, SINTERKLAAS came!  The door was locked and the window was open.  We could see the pepernoten strewn all over the room and the hay and carrots were gone!!  When we finally got into the room we found little candy treats in our klompen.  But the story doesn't end there because Ms. Musters got a riddle... One of the Dutch customs is to write a riddle that you have to solve in order to find your gift.

SinterKlaas

This week we have been exploring symbols through holiday traditions and customs.  Today I brought two special guests (my nieces) to help with our Dutch custom of celebrating Sinterklaas.   The wooden shoes or klompen play an important role.   The Superheroes were able to create their own model of klompen and decorate with symbols that were meaningful to them.  Next, we had to add hay and carrots for Sinterklaas' witte paard (white horse).  Just in case he decided to come and visit!

Student-Led Conferences

Student-led conferences were a hugh success.  The Superheroes did a great job sharing their portfolios, showing how to use a QR code and taking their parents on a tour of the classroom.  The students are so proud to show you their work!

Where We Are in Time and Place

We have begun a new planner and it looks like everyone is interested!!  Where we are in time and place will explore how pictures and symbols help people communicate and make sense of the world.
We will be looking at maps a little closer and noticing the different parts such as the title, the map key and the symbols on the key.

How We Organize Ourselves Summative

Summative Activity

The Superheroes participated in an interesting activity today.  In each cooperative group, each student had an important role to help complete a turkey.  In order to make the turkey the groups had to follow certain instructions and use certain materials.  There was one little catch...  each table did not have all the materials that were needed.  They had to barter and trade with other groups for what they wanted to finish their product.  I, of course, had the most valuable item -the eyes!   The eyes had to be purchased using money.   It was amazing to watch The Superheroes work together and help each other out.  In the process they gained an understanding how countries depend on each other for supplies to make products.  These products can be used to meet our needs or our wants.

Needs and Wants

One of the lines of inquiry for our planner was to understand what is a need and what is a want.  The students have been exploring this concept in different ways.  Today, we decided to explore during our Writer's Workshop.  The students were given the prompt:  I need _______, but I want______.  The first blank had to be filled with something that you NEED to live and the second blank is what you really WANT instead.   The end results were fun to read and share with our class!

Creative Day

Let's just say there was no shortage of ideas on Creative Day!
We had so much fun working together and using all the materials that everyone brought.
The students came up with some truly unique ideas.

Student Led Conferences

It's almost that time of year again when the students are in charge of the conferences.  We have a lot  to get ready!  The Superheroes are working on their binders, organizing their work and completing their summatives.  In addition, they will be choosing goals based on the Learner Profile.  This is one of my favorite activities because the students share their knowledge with each other and the parents and I am just listening.  They never cease to amaze me with how much they know.  So, if you cannot come on the designated day - please schedule a time when you can come.
