Making Goop????

This experiment required some interesting ingredients.  Liquid starch and glue!! We combined these two ingredients and a chemical change began to occur.  The mixture was at first a liquid and wet and slimy.  The more we mixed the less liquid it became.  Next, we had to kneed the mixture using our hands.  The liquid we began with became a solid!!  How is that possible?

Making Butter

The best part about our new planner is that we get to explore matter.  One way we explored this week is how to change matter.  Is it a physical change or a chemical change?  We put some cream, a little salt and a few marbles in a container and after several minutes of shaking as hard as we could... we had a solid: BUTTER.   Next, we gave it the taste test.  MMMMMM homemade butter what could be better.  And learning about properties of matter and how matter changes at the same time!

A Year With Frog and Toad

All t-shirts were found.  All scarves were knotted.  All mittens were on!  The snail had her shell.
The Superheroes are ready!  What a great job everyone did!  The performance was so enjoyable.
Congratulations to The Superheroes and our amazing Mrs. Bardin!!

Happy Birthday!

Thank you everyone for all the flowers, cards, gifts and treats!  You made it a wonderful day.  The best card I received said: 40, 70 or 80 I can't tell how old you are!!!  Fill out the following:
My name is ________________.  I am __________ years old.  Said _____________.

First Grade Program

Mrs. Bardin has been getting us ready for our First Grade Program:  A Year with Frog and Toad!  We are so excited.  Check out this amazing banner created by Ben's mom!!   Mason's mom created the fantastic snowflakes t-shirts.  Thank you so much!!

Crocodile Encounter

Another very successful field trip!  Our bus took a little long to get there (apparently it cannot get above 50 miles per hour!), but we made it!!!  It is quite an adventure to see all the reptiles and learn the differences between a crocodile and an alligator!

Matter with bunelos??

This week's story involved a birthday party that included bunelos.  We used some real bunelos to explore our new planner's lines of inquiry to discover the properties of matter.
The best part was we got to eat our matter!!

Morning Announcements!

We were so excited to be a part of morning announcements.  The Superheroes worked hard to come up with a great quote!  Unfortunately I had to take pictures of the screen so they did not come out so great!  Everyone did such a good job!  Way to go, Superheroes!

Enrichment Time

The Superheroes love enrichment time!  We work on math problems using various games and create challenges for ourselves.  We also love it when my old students come back to help!
Keep up the good work, Superheroes!

How We Organize Oursevles

The Superheroes are working on the summative for our planner.   They had to work togetehr coopertively to acquire the goods they needed to order to make a product.  The product:  a rainbow with a pot of gold.  How can you make it if you don't have a pot?  You will have to trade or barter goods and services to obtain what you need.  This product will be in their student portfolios so be sure to ask your student what their role was during student led conferences.

Heart Mapping

During Writer's Workshop we only write about our lives.  (No fantasy allowed!) In order to help facilitate ideas the students created heart maps.  There were no rules on how to create the heart or how you wanted your heart to look...  you only had to write
words or draw pictures of what is in your heart.

Writer's Workshop

Writer's Workshop is a time when the students do nothing but write.   We have learned all the parts of the writing cycle and are now working individually or with partners to work on our writing.  Revision is the hardest part because it does not mean make your writing longer it means to make your writing better.  That is why we have become experts at conferencing!  Our friends help by listening to us read aloud and asking questions and making suggestions.

Story Dictation

The art of story dictation is appearing everywhere in our classroom.  Here two students are working in the writing station.  One student is writing her friends' story!   The white board is another station where students can work together to create a story.  You notice in the picture that they have already picked out their cast of characters!

Summer Jewel Party

Since we already had a winter jewel party aka Frozen!  The Superheroes decide that the theme for this jewel party should be summer.  We brought our shades and our beach blankets and enjoyed popcorn and juice.  A huge THANK YOU parents for always being so willing to contribute whatever is needed in the classroom. As you can see we had a great time!!

Adventures in Space

As a class, we have dictating stories on Writing Wednesdays.  Everyone participates in creating the narrative of the story.  Our stories are usually fantasy versus realistic fiction.  This week we took an old story and turned into a book!  Each student contributed the artwork to our book.  Remember to ask your Superhero to read it you when you come to student led conferences!
