Morning Announcements!

Oh My gosh, our class was so excited Friday morning!  It really was Fun Friday!!
The Superheroes along with Ms. Blake's class were a part of the announcements.
They were asked to perform a song in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr.

Goods and Services

As we continue to explore our new planner, How We Organize ourselves, we looked at what our community supplies.  We made a list of what you can find in our community and then determined if they are supplying a good or a service.  First we had to understand that a service is something someone provides for you at a price.  Examples include getting your pet groomed or getting a shot at the doctor's office.  A good is something that is made.  Examples would be candy, pens and the rug we sit on at school.

How does the moon get light?

This week we explored the phases of the moon.  We learned that the moon gets its light from the sun.  The amount of light from the sun indicates what phase of the moon is showing.  Here we are trying to use cookies (Fun and Messy) to create, describe and explain the phases of the moon.

Fractions Part II

We continue to explore factions and equal parts.  This week we experimented with squares, rectangles and circles.  The Superheroes used fractions to create art.  Next, they had to write about.
For Example, I used 2 out of 4 squares.   Great Job!

My Heart is full!

Heartfelt messages from the Superheroes.

February 14th!

The Superheroes had a wonderful time sharing treats today!  I loved hearing, "Thank you for the Valentine!"  The students were so excited to find the special notes in their bags.  No one was more excited than me!  I received lovely handwritten notes which I will treasure.

How We Organize Ourselves

How We Organize Ourselves is an inquiry into human made systems and communities.  We will be looking at how interactions throughout communities involve economic activities.  Our lines of inquiry include looking at needs and wants around the world, roles and responsibilities of citizens, and resources of local and global communities.  We first took a look at our community.  The students created a building that they thought was important and then determined if the role was to provide a service or a good to our community.

Valentine's Day is Coming!

Cold, windy and rainy days makes a great excuse for indoor art activities!  Today we created our Valentine's Day bags...  so excited for Friday!

100th day activities!

Here are the Superheroes!  They looked so great walking through the hallways using their canes!  We went to visit Ms. Vamvakias at 10:00 AM to work on a project called ten 10's.  Ms. Patin came to visit us and took lots of pictures.  She was very impressed with our outfits, our projects and how well everyone was cooperating.  Way to go, Superheroes!!

First Challenge

Our first challenge on the 100th day of school, was to build a puzzle with 100 pieces!  The Superheroes broke up into cooperative teams and got right to work.  Each group had a different puzzle.  It was so exciting to see the finished puzzles!  Great team work was displayed by all!

100 days in first grade!!

The 100th Day of School on PhotoPeach

100th Day of School

The 100th day of school!  The teachers are beginning to look very old!  We visited Ms. Vamvakias class to do some 100 challenges.  Mr. Obi came by for a surprise visit!  (the kids were not fooled!)

Picture Pie!

We have been studying fractions and discovering what equal and not equal mean.  We used Ed Emberly's Picture Pie idea to create pictures using circles divided into halves, fourths or eighths.

Bash Creation!

Amelia's mom come in today to work on a SUPERHERO creation for bash!  The students were so excited!  First, they had to create an original design on paper.  Next, the design had to be 'carved' into a piece of Styrofoam.  Finally, the students painted over the Styrofoam and printed the picture. Viola!! Bash Creation! A special thank you to Amelia's mom for putting this all together.

Math Workstations

The Superheroes are hard at work learning addition facts, problem solving and skip counting.   Students love this time when they get to work with a partner solving math problems.  They are having fun and learning at the same time!
